It’s our final week of screenings for our Winter 2019 season – before we blast off for Moon Week next week, take flight with ROCKETMAN on Friday and make sure to catch ‘em all with two monster movies on Saturday!

Taron Egerton plays Elton John in this musical fantasy exploring the iconic British singer-songwriter’s life from early beginnings as a child prodigy through to his breakthrough years in the 1970s and 80s.

In a world where humans and Pokémon co-exist, a teenager joins forces with an amnesiac Detective Pikachu to locate his missing father, uncovering a plot that could threaten their entire universe.

The ANU Film Group’s Spring 2019 season begins on Thursday 25 July with a FREE screening of AVENGERS: ENDGAME and then continues for 10 weeks with a wide assortment of blockbusters, foreign and independent films, family fare and classics.

SPRING PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

While we believe every one of the 46 films screening between July 25 and September 28 is worth a look, here are a couple of highlights not to be missed:

• Canberra’s very first Hungarian Film Festival (September 9 – 15) featuring new release and classic films over 7 consecutive days.

ANU Moon Week: July 17 – July 21

ANU MOON WEEK: JULY 17 – 21

50 years ago, the world took a giant leap when the Apollo 11 mission landed a man on the Moon on July 20, 1969. To celebrate the milestone anniversary of this historic occasion, the ANU and ACT Government will be hosting a five-day programme of events and activities ranging from stargazing to public lectures, tours, exhibitions and space school.

Of course, no celebration of the Moon landing would be complete without films and the ANU Film Group is proud to be co-hosting a number of FREE screenings of space-themed films for all to attend, including FIRST MAN, WALL-E and THE DISH.

What's On This Week: WOMAN AT WAR, THE HUSTLE

We know it’s still pretty cold out, but ‘Spring’ is just around the corner… that is, our upcoming Spring season which will run from July to September!

The new season kicks off on Thursday 25 July with a FREE screening of one of the biggest films of all time – AVENGERS: ENDGAME – at 7:30 PM. So mark your calendar and assemble everyone you know, because it’s going to be an epic night!

Our full Spring 2019 programme will be released later tonight, but members coming along to tonight’s screening will get the first look at all of the films we’ll be screening between July 25 and September 28.

A new season may be coming soon, but there’s still plenty to see this week with a girl-powered line-up featuring the final film of our Best Foreign Language Film Festival and two gender-swapped new takes on classic ‘80s comedies.

• FRI 5 JULY @ 7:30 PM: WOMAN AT WAR (M, 101 mins)

An environmental activist risks everything by resorting to sabotage in an attempt to drive out the heavy industry taking over her picturesque home town in this acclaimed Icelandic comedy-thriller.

• SAT 6 JULY @ 7:30 PM: THE HUSTLE (M, 94 mins) + LITTLE (PG, 109 mins)

In THE HUSTLE, two con artists (Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson) put aside their differences to take down the men who have wronged them in this gender-swapped remake of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

Then, in LITTLE (at approx. 9:15 PM), a ruthless mogul gets the chance to relive her life – whether she likes it or not – when she wakes up one morning magically transformed into her 13-year-old self.

New Programme Coming Soon + What's On This Week

We’re putting the final touches on our next programme for our Spring (July to September) season now and can’t wait to share it with you next week, so stay tuned for news on that!

Plus, in partnership with the ANU, we will be hosting a number of free screenings as part of Moon Week, a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969. These will take place between Thursday 18 July and Saturday 20 July, with the full line-up to be announced next week too.

This week, however, be sure to check out Sweden’s weird and wonderful Oscar entry as part of our Best Foreign Language Film Festival, as well as an action-packed double featuring the return of master assassin John Wick followed by a blast from the past (or is it?) in the original TOTAL RECALL.

A border guard thrives on her ability to identify smugglers with her unique sense of smell, but is soon forced to confront a terrifying reality when she uncovers her true nature in this Oscar-nominated Swedish fantasy film.

• SAT 29 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 (MA, 131 mins) + TOTAL RECALL (MA, 113 mins)

Legendary hit man John Wick (Keanu Reeves) must fight his way out of New York City after a $14 million contract is placed on his head, making him a marked man and the target of the world's most ruthless assassins.

Then, in the 1990 sci-fi classic TOTAL RECALL, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a man living in the year 2084 who recalls memories of a different life on Mars but can't determine if the experiences are real or planted.

Our Best Foreign Language Film festival continues this week with Japan’s Oscar entry and winner of the top prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Plus, step right up to Tim Burton’s star-studded DUMBO remake and check out Jonah Hill’s acclaimed directorial debut.

• FRI 21 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: SHOPLIFTERS (M, 121 mins)

A ragtag family of shoplifters decides to take in a neglected young girl, testing the fragile bonds that unite them, in this Oscar-nominated Japanese drama that also was awarded the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

• SAT 22 JUNE @ 5 PM: DUMBO (PG, 112 mins)

Tim Burton directs Disney's live-action remake of their classic 1941 animated film, in which a young elephant with oversized ears enabling him to fly becomes the new star attraction for a struggling circus. Starring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Eva Green.

• SAT 22 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: MID90S (MA, 86 mins)

Jonah Hill makes his directorial debut with this coming-of-age comedy-drama set in 1990s Los Angeles, in which a 13-year-old boy spends his summer navigating between a troubled home life and the new friends he meets at a local skate shop.

What's On This Week: CAPHARNAÜM, GONE WITH THE WIND, LORDS OF CHAOS

This week, celebrate the 80th anniversary of a cinematic classic, experience a Lebanese film that has been hailed by many as one of the year’s best, and explore the shocking origins of a black metal band.

• THU 13 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: LORDS OF CHAOS (R, 117 mins)

In the early 1990s, a teenager becomes fixated on Norwegian black metal, mounting increasingly shocking publicity stunts to make his band's name known – whatever the cost – in this semi-fictionalised account of the origins of black metal band Mayhem.

• FRI 14 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: CAPHARNAÜM (M, 126 mins)

Our Best Foreign Language Film Festival continues with this highly acclaimed Lebanese drama in which a streetwise 12-year-old boy is sentenced to prison for a crime and decides to sue his negligent parents for the 'crime' of giving him life.

• SAT 15 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: GONE WITH THE WIND (PG, 238 mins w/ intermission)

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of one of the most beloved films of all time! In the American South during the Civil War, a strong-willed woman (Vivien Leigh) finds herself falling for a charming scoundrel (Clark Gable) in this 1939 epic romance that won 8 Oscars, including Best Picture.

The film will be presented in two parts, with a brief intermission after the first two hours.

What’s On This Week + Best Foreign Language Film Festival Begins!

This week, you can catch the latest film from Oscar-winning Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, explore the dangers of ambition with two American indies, and join us for the start of our 2019 Best Foreign Language Film Festival.

Over the next five Fridays, we will be screening five very different films that were the official submissions to this year’s Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Hailing from countries as diverse as Belgium, Lebanon, Japan, Sweden and Iceland – and spanning genres from personal drama to black comedy to surreal fantasy – don’t miss your chance to catch these little-seen international gems on the big screen at the ANU Film Group!

• THU 6 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: EVERYBODY KNOWS (M, 133 mins)

Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem star in the first Spanish-language film from Iranian director Asghar Farhadi (A SEPARATION, THE SALESMAN), in which a woman (Cruz) returns home to Spain to attend a wedding, but the reunion turns tragic when her older daughter suddenly disappears.

• FRI 7 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: GIRL (M, 106 mins)

Our 2019 Best Foreign Language Film Festival commences with this Belgian drama, in which a 15-year-old girl – born in the body of a boy – dreams of one day becoming a professional ballerina and does whatever is necessary to make this a reality.

• SAT 8 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT (M, 111 mins) + VOX LUX (MA, 114 mins)

In THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT, a pair of high-frequency traders go up against their former employer in an effort to make a fortune by building a fibre-optic cable line across the United States. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård and Salma Hayek.

Then, in VOX LUX (at approx. 9:30 PM), having risen to fame after surviving a school shooting as a teenager, a troubled and outspoken pop star (Natalie Portman) finds herself struggling to cope with the pitfalls of celebrity as an adult.

The end of May is nigh – and we’re closing out the month with Marvel’s first female-led superhero flick, an acclaimed Danish thriller, Lars von Trier’s latest controversial film, a romantic comedy with a political twist, and a look at the early years of 1920s screen star Louise Brooks.

And while there’s still eight weeks to go for our current Winter season, we’re already beginning work on our next programme for Spring 2019!

• FRI 31 MAY @ 7:30 PM: THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT (R, 152 min)

A failed architect (Matt Dillon) recounts the events – and the elaborately orchestrated murders – that led to him becoming a vicious serial killer in the latest film from controversial Danish director Lars von Trier.

• SAT 1 JUNE @ 7:30 PM: LONG SHOT (M, 125 min) + THE CHAPERONE (PG, 108 min)

In LONG SHOT, a journalist (Seth Rogen) unexpectedly runs into his childhood crush (Charlize Theron), rekindling sparks when she hires him to be a speechwriter in her campaign to run for President.

Then, in THE CHAPERONE (at approx. 9:45 PM), 15-year-old Louise Brooks gets the chance to study with a leading New York dance troupe in the 1920s – as long as she is accompanied by a watchful chaperone.

Thanks to Transmission Films, we have tickets to give away to RED JOAN, a new British spy thriller starring Judi Dench.

In the present day, Joan Stanley (Dench) finds her tranquil retirement suddenly disrupted when she is arrested by MI5 and accused of being a spy. Flashing back to the 1930s, young Joan (Sophie Cookson) falls in love with a Russian saboteur while at Cambridge University – and finds herself confronted with an impossible choice.

When his family’s pet cat is tragically killed, a father buries it in the pet cemetery near their new home, setting off a perilous chain of events that unleashes a horrific evil in this new take on Stephen King’s iconic tale.

Then, in THE MONSTER SQUAD (at approx. 9:15 PM), five kids face off against a legendary group of monsters – including Dracula, the Mummy and the Wolfman – when they descend upon their small town in this 1987 cult horror-comedy.
