You’ve asked for it and here it is – popcorn is now available at ANU Film Group screenings starting from tonight!
Going to the movies isn’t quite the same without popcorn, which is why we’ve been investigating ways to make this right over the past few months. And we’re now thrilled to announce a new partnership with the wonderful folks at Cracking Corn to bring popcorn to our new cinema at Kambri.
Cracking Corn is a local, family-run business that specialises in hand crafting popcorn in a variety of delicious flavours. Since launching in 2016, they have earned a reputation as the best producers of popcorn in the Canberra region, and have become a regular presence at most markets, sports games and shows around town.
We will be selling two of Cracking Corn’s most popular flavours – Salted and Salty Sweety – with each bag of popcorn popped by hand and then heat sealed for freshness before being delivered to us for sale. The bags are also resealable so you can take what’s left home with you at the end of the night.
Bags will sell for $5 each – with 50% of profits being donated to the Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak, continuing our long-standing relationship with them, and in recognition of their many years of service running the ANU Film Group canteen.
Sale of popcorn at the ANU Film Group will be strictly on a trial basis to begin with, during which we will assess its ongoing viability based on feedback, sales and other factors. So if you like Cracking Corn popcorn and want to see it continue being sold at Film Group, be sure to stop by the front desk and pick up a bag at your next screening!

Did you know that donated blood platelets only have an extremely short life span of just five days? The Australian Red Cross is always on the lookout for blood donors, so we would like to encourage those of you who are eligible to donate blood to please consider doing so.
The ANU Film Group is registered with the Red Cross’s RED25 program, which unites communities around Australia in saving lives through blood donation. We’re very happy to report that, as of yesterday afternoon, the covers on the cinema’s exit lights have finally been replaced and are no longer glaringly bright! This includes one along the right wall near the bins that had previously been covered by a curtain up until last week.
Thanks to everyone for their patience with this. We flagged the issue with the builders more than six weeks ago (well before screenings began), but there was a delay in getting the replacements in as the supplier had run out of stock of that particular type of cover (i.e. ones intended for cinema use). Fortunately, it’s all sorted now and we can finally tick that off the list.
The builders have also laid down more glow-in-the-dark anti-slip tread in the areas towards the front of the cinema that we had previously identified as trip hazards. We will be monitoring the effectiveness of this solution over the coming weeks.
We’re now working on trying to get the temperature in the cinema a bit more regulated – as we’re well aware it has been freezing on some nights – and hope to have that fixed up soon too!

ENTRY ARRANGEMENTS FOR FRIDAY’S SCREENING OF ‘SUSPIRIA’

We have been informed that a private ANU event will be taking place in the foyer of the Kambri Cultural Centre from 6-7 PM tomorrow night (Friday 29 March). As a result, entry into the foyer will be restricted until 7 PM or shortly after.
We recommend that our members consider arriving no earlier than 7 PM for our screening of SUSPIRIA tomorrow, and to expect possible delays getting into the area. We also recommend using the doors nearest to the cinema to enter the building, as it is likely that the doors facing Tangney Road will be locked.
We will still aim to start the film on schedule at 7:30 PM where possible. Thank you for your cooperation.
Close out the month of March at the ANU Film Group by witnessing the return of Mary Poppins, venturing into World Wide Web with Wreck-It Ralph, uncovering witches in 1970s Berlin, going on a road trip through Palestine and trafficking drugs with Clint Eastwood.
Plus, on Wednesday, be sure to stick around for a special panel discussion following our screening of THE CHILDREN ACT. The film explores a family’s right to refuse medical treatment on grounds of religious belief, and the discussion – presented by ANU Law Reform and Social Justice – will feature experts in the field including:
- Professor Tom Faunce, ANU College of Law and ANU College of Medicine, Biology and the Environment
- The Hon John Faulks, Australian Law Reform Commissioner and former judge of the Family Court
