February 2019

Trip Hazards in New Cinema

28th February, 2019

We are writing to inform members that a number of trip hazards have been identified over the past few weeks in the new Kambri cinema. Specifically, there are low steps located towards the front of the cinema that have been causing people to trip as they enter or exit the rows on the right hand side (when facing the screen).

We thank everyone who has brought these hazards to our attention, and apologise to anyone who has fallen over these steps in the last week. These are without a doubt design flaws, especially as cinemas are intended to operate predominantly in the dark, and work will need to be carried out to make the area safer.

We reported these trip hazards to the ANU when we first discovered them over two weeks ago and have since been following up on an almost daily basis for action to be taken. While the ANU Film Group may be one of the primary users of the new cinema, we were unfortunately not involved in its construction or design. Nor do we own the building, which limits what we are able to do to rectify the issues ourselves (as much as we’d like to!).

All we are able to do for now is to make as many people as possible aware of the hazards, which we hope we have done by laying down hazard tape in the affected areas last week and by bringing it to the attention of our members in this message. We will continue to follow this up with the ANU as a matter of urgency, but do anticipate it may take some time to rectify.

In the meantime, we ask that all members please keep an eye out for these trip hazards, and be particularly careful when entering the rows at the front of the cinema – especially if you are arriving after the film has already started.

On a related note, we would also like to issue a timely reminder to members to please treat our committee members with respect. We understand there are issues with the cinema, but that does not make it any more acceptable to behave in a rude or inappropriate manner towards us.

The ANU Film Group is run by volunteers who offer a service to members in their own free time. We absolutely share your frustrations, and have been working around the clock – alongside our own work, study and family commitments – to do all that we possibly can to get a number of issues resolved. All we ask is that you please bear with us and behave in a polite and courteous manner.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and cooperation!

HELP WANTED: DO YOU WANT TO BE A DOOR PERSON OR A COMMITTEE MEMBER?
...........................................................

We're currently on the lookout for one more door person to assist us at screenings. Door people are the smiling, friendly faces of the Group who greet you as you enter, and scan your membership card. So if you're a current member, punctual, have a sunny disposition, and are skilled in the fine art of card scanning, this may be for you!

Please note that this is an unpaid volunteer position, but all door people receive a free membership for the following programme as a token of thanks upon completion of the required number of sessions.

Interested? Want to find out more? Email us at info@anufg.org.au now!

If you'd rather help out in other ways and get involved in the day-to-day running of Australia’s largest film society, you'll want to save the date for our Annual General Meeting on MONDAY 18 MARCH at 6 PM in the Kambri cinema.

This is where we appoint our new committee of volunteers that run the Group, and we’re always keen to see some new faces. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to commit a bit of time to help us continue being the film society that you know and love. Please contact us if you'd like to know more.

What's On in Our First Week at Kambri

19th February, 2019

And we’re off! After years of work and a particularly harrowing final week, we’re happy to report that we held our very first screening in the new Kambri cinema last night to a packed full house of 305 people.

We can’t wait for all of you to come along and check out a film in our new home, test out the comfy new seats, the brilliant new projector and the immersive new 7.1 surround sound system. Plus, we have new posters, flyers and even new permanent plastic membership cards too – which finally give you the ability to renew your membership without replacing your card each time!

While everything is still new and shiny, we would like to point out there is still some work to be done on the new cinema over the next few weeks. The ANU Film Group will be working with builders and electricians to have this work completed in a timely manner, and thank you for your patience during this time as we resolve a few outstanding issues.

We also welcome any feedback you might have about the new cinema, so please don’t hesitate to let us know if you’ve noticed anything odd by sending us an email to info@anufg.org.au and we will pass it on to the appropriate parties.

Parking at Kambri

16th February, 2019

You’ve all been very patient over the last few months and, with Kambri having its grand opening earlier this week, we finally have details on the parking options for the new cinema.

First off, as we mentioned a while back, there is an underground parking garage for 400 cars right below the Cultural Centre building where the cinema is located. This is a paid parking facility operated by Care Park and the parking rates for our screening times are currently as follows:

• Weekdays after 5 pm – $6 flat rate
• All day Saturday and Sunday – $5 flat rate

We acknowledge that these rates are higher than the after-hours and weekend rates at most parking facilities around Canberra, and are disappointed at the outcome. Rest assured that we will be lobbying Care Park and the ANU for reduced rates or concessions for our members going forward.

In the meantime, we have put together a map of some alternative parking options near the cinema that will be free at the time of our screenings. You can find this map by CLICKING HERE

While there are a number of surface parking options around the ANU in the vicinity of Kambri, we recommend the following three in particular for their size and proximity to the cinema:

1. Baldessin Parking Station (multi-storey parking and outdoor surface lot): approximately 450 metres/6 minutes walk from cinema
2. School of Music (two outdoor surface parking lots): approximately 400 metres/5 minutes walk from cinema
3. Research School of Chemistry (outdoor surface parking lot): approximately 300 metres/4 minutes walk from cinema

All of these parking spots are free after 5 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends, but we do encourage you to always check signage before parking as conditions may change.

There is also limited street parking along Childers Street, University Avenue, Hutton Street and North Road.

...........................................................
FIRST WEEK OF SCREENINGS
...........................................................

We look forward to welcoming all of you to our new home next week! Come along, say hi, pick up your membership card, a poster or a flyer, and check out one of the many films screening in our bumper first week:

• Mon 18 Feb @ 7:30 PM – SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE (Free Screening)
• Tue 19 Feb @ 7:30 PM – WIDOWS
• Wed 20 Feb @ 7:30 PM – THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST (Free Screening)
• Thu 21 Feb @ 7:30 PM – BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
• Fri 22 Feb @ 7:30 PM – BOY ERASED + SORRY TO BOTHER YOU
• Sat 23 Feb @ 7:30 PM – BUMBLEBEE + OVERLORD

We anticipate that our first screening – the free screening of SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE on Monday – will be VERY busy and is highly likely to fill up. So if you’re already a member, you may wish to consider coming along to the members-only encore screening of the film instead on Saturday 2 March (just one week later) to avoid missing out due to the anticipated crowds.

Not yet a member? Join up at any screening from next week or online now by going to www.anufg.org.au/join!

First Look at New Kambri Cinema

11th February, 2019

Today marked the grand opening of the ANU’s Kambri Precinct, and we’re excited that we can finally share with you the first official look at our new cinema home to commemorate the occasion!

Click on THIS LINK to view an album of photos of the new Cultural Centre building and, of course, the cinema itself in all its glory (note: Facebook account NOT required to view photos).

With 305 plush comfy seats, a bigger 10-metre wide screen and an even more immersive 7.1 surround sound system, watching films at the ANU Film Group has never been better!

There’s still quite a bit of work to go before we’re ready to kick off screenings next Monday, however, so please bear with us while we put the final pieces in place. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to send us an email to info@anufg.org.au and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

We’ve also managed to find out more about the parking situation today and are in the process of putting together a map of the nearest parking spots that we’ll circulate before the end of the week. Thanks for your ongoing patience on this matter!

And, finally… if you’re not a member yet, what more could you possibly want?! We’ve got a great programme of films and some pretty nice new digs (if we may say so ourselves), so head on over to www.anufg.org.au/join to join up for an Annual or Autumn membership now!

January 2019

Autumn 2019 Programme + New Saturday Start Times

23rd January, 2019

The Oscar nominations may have been announced overnight, but we reckon we’ve got something even better to share…

With less than a month before screenings begin and without further ado, we’d like to present to you our Autumn 2019 line-up, one of four seasonal programmes that will screen this year – and the first in our brand new cinema!

You can find information about all 55 films screening from February to April in three ways:
• View it on our website at www.anufg.org.au/programme
• Download a PDF flyer that you can print out and share by CLICKING HERE
• Import the entire programme straight into your calendar of choice using the iCAL FILE HERE

As always, our programme features a little something for everyone, and while we believe that every film is worth checking out, here are some noteworthy highlights:

• Oscar Nominees: 10 of this year’s nominated films, including Best Picture nominees THE FAVOURITE, VICE, GREEN BOOK and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

• Hollywood Blockbusters: some of the year’s biggest box office hits, such as AQUAMAN, BUMBLEBEE and FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD

• Free Screenings: tell your friends to try before they buy at our free-for-all screenings of SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE and THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST

• Family Films: kids watch for free anytime, including at family-friendly films like RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET and MARY POPPINS RETURNS

• World Cinema: foreign films from countries as diverse as Palestine, Turkey, Japan, France, Lebanon, Spain, and Ireland

• Indie Darlings: small but no less worthy independent films like EIGHTH GRADE, LEAVE NO TRACE and YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE

• Cult Films: those of you wanting something a bit off the beaten path can check out films like MANDY, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU and SUSPIRIA

• Annual General Meeting: not a film, but your one chance each year to ask questions, find out about future plans for the Group, and even run for a position on the committee.

So if you were waiting on a programme before joining up, you no longer have any excuses. Memberships start from $30 for a season or $90 for a full year. Head to www.anufg.org.au/join to sign up now!

(Please note that processing memberships may take longer than the usual 3-5 business days as we work on getting our new cinema ready – but your membership certificate will definitely be emailed to you before screenings start for 2019.)

...........................................................
NEW SATURDAY START TIMES
...........................................................

For improved consistency and to better facilitate the changeovers between 5 PM films, Saturday screenings will be starting at 7:30 PM instead of 7 PM from 2019 onwards.

This means that regardless of what day of the week it is, the screening will begin at 7:30 PM, making screening times more consistent and easier to remember. The exception to this are a number of 5 PM screenings on select Saturdays, which will be specially marked.

Having more time between the end of a 5 PM screening and the start of a 7:30 PM screening will also give audience members who wish to stay for both films the opportunity to grab a bite to eat in between screening – with an abundance of food outlets and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the new cinema.
