Many of you will no doubt recall the 2018 news story of twelve boys and their soccer coach who became trapped deep inside a flooded cave in Northern Thailand. Although fearing multiple fatalities, the rescue divers never gave up as, over the course of several days, viewers around the world watched and waited with bated breath.

The Rescue draws on archival news footage, along with never-before-seen material and exclusive interviews, to recreate the story of one of the most perilous and extraordinary rescues of modern times – one which highlights the courage of the rescuers and the shared humanity of a united international community. Once again, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (directors of the Academy Award-winning documentary Free Solo) demonstrate their ability to create a spell-binding documentary even when you may know the outcome.

Living alone deep in the Oregon wilderness, the reclusive Rob (Nicolas Cage) ekes out a meagre existence hunting for and then selling truffles, aided by his prized foraging pig, Apple. But after his beloved companion is carried off in the middle of the night, Rob is forced to return to civilisation to confront his past along with some long-buried trauma.

Right now you’re probably thinking this all sounds like John Wick with Nicolas Cage in the Keanu Reeves role and a pig in place of his beloved dog – but you’d be as wrong as vegan bacon. Pig is actually a quiet, mesmerising and melancholy meditation on love and loss. Playing completely against expectations, the ever-unpredictable Cage delivers some of his best work in years with a shockingly measured performance and nary an operatic monologue to be found. See it to believe it.
