While working underground, Italian-American plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) find themselves transported down a mysterious pipe and into a magical world. When they are separated, Mario is drawn into a battle between Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), the Mushroom Kingdom’s strong-willed ruler, and evil warlord Bowser (Jack Black). Will he be able to find his brother, help save the Kingdom and get home to Brooklyn?

After 1993’s misguided live-action attempt at bringing pop culture’s most popular plumber to the big screen, Mario is finally back in this exuberant and gloriously animated adventure from Illumination (Minions, Sing). Packed with affectionate nods to the Nintendo’s beloved video game franchise, this is truly a labour of love.

When he is arrested for a DUI, hot-headed basketball coach Marcus (Woody Harrelson) is given a choice between prison time or community service. He chooses the latter, which tasks him with coaching a basketball team for young people with learning disabilities. Though initially sceptical, Marcus grows to respect and admire his players – and becomes determined to make their dreams of winning the regional championships come true.

Director Bobby Farrelly is best known for quirky-yet-offensive comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary. So it’s almost surprising to see the care and warm-heartedness he affords to this film, which notably includes more than 10 actors with real-life intellectual disabilities.
