The dead have risen from their graves to feast on the flesh of the living. Anyone killed by the living dead soon rises as a zombie themselves. Shambling hordes of flesh-crazed undead roam the countryside searching for fresh meat. The only way to "kill" them once and for all is to destroy what remains of their brains!
A motley group of survivors take shelter in a deserted suburban shopping mall. Hoping to survive long enough for rescue to arrive, they barricade themselves inside. This is America, so the sporting goods stores provide enough high-powered weaponry to hold off an army of zombies. They'll need it!
The second of gore-master George Romero's legendary Living Dead trilogy, the others being Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Day of the Dead (1985). Dawn of the Dead is probably the most accessible of the three. The horror and scares are leavened with plenty of action and humour.
One of my favourite aspects of this film is the surprising amount of satire. The living attempt to create their own little survivalist utopia - running riot in the stores taking whatever they want (a delicious fantasy for the financially challenged). Outside, the zombies mill aimlessly and without the scent of flesh to arouse them, they gravitate to places that had meaning when they were alive. Yup, they go to the mall!
If nothing else, watching this movie should make your next trip to Belconnen Mall or the Hyperdome a little more interesting.
