An intelligent, fast paced action thriller Enemy of the State is the story of a high level government official's efforts to eliminate an innocent man who unwittingly possesses information implicating him in the death of a U.S. congressman.
A chance encounter with an old friend destroys attorney Robert Clayton Dean's (Smith) fast-track career and happy home life when he is framed for murder by a corrupt intelligence official. As an administrator on loan from the State Department to the National Security Agency, Thomas Brian Reynolds (Voight) appropriates the vast resources of his department to commit the perfect crime and conceal a political cover up of immense proportions. Dean's only hope to reclaim his life and prove his innocence is a man he's never met, a mysterious underground information broker and ex-intelligence operative known only as Brill (Hackman). [A nod to his performance in The Conversation - Ed]
The movie poses an interesting question about "what if" the government had the ability to track every move you made, using technology we are all familiar with - satellites, mobile phones and even the household fire detector. A movie to make you think about the "possible" if not the "probable".
