Practical Magic tells the tale of the two Owens sisters, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman), who belong to a line of witches. Sally is gifted in the craft but spurns it for love, a husband and children. When the curse of the Owen women holds, her love dies and she rejects her upbringing until Gillian needs her help. Gillian is less gifted in the craft and compensates by living a wild life. When her latest lover, Jimmy (Goran Visnijc) assaults her, Gillian cries out to Sally. In trying to get away from him, Jimmy is accidentally murdered. Sally tries to bring him back to life but raises an evil spirit instead. The movie really gets going when Detective Gary Haller (Quinn) enters the scene trying to find Jimmy.

There are some poignant moments in the film as Sally tries to integrate into town life and the midnight margarita scene is great fun. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing tried in their roles of the Owen Aunts but poor scripting and a lame plot made it difficult for them. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman fans will enjoy seeing them on the screen, however, Eyes Wide Shut will prove to be a better medium for Nicole.
