Toy Story 2 is a movie for the kids among us. That's the classic movie review: "For the young, and the young at heart". However, that's total smeg. To truly understand Toy Story 2, to get its full meaning, you must be an adult. You must have experienced love, and you must have been trapped in Nowheresville. Toy Story 2 is a movie about people. They are made of cloth and plastic, not flesh and blood, and they are quick with the one-liners, but they are people nonetheless. You can put yourself in Woody's shoes, and play along with his hokey eagerness. You will be moved by the lonely cowgirl's song, even though your brain will be feeling disgusted by the blatant emotional manipulation. Most of all, you will burst with suspense and excitement when Buzz Lightyear meets his final nemesis. This film is worth seeing by anyone who loves a good story, told well, as well as by anyone who loves beautiful film-making. And most of all, by anyone who ever played with a doll when they were a kid. This is not your story. It is their story. The story of the toys.

Inept, yet good-hearted security guard John Brown (Broderick) dreams of becoming a heroic policeman. When grievously injured whilst in pursuit of evil genius, Sanford Scolex (Everett), his fantasy becomes reality when Dr. Brenda Bradford (Joely Fisher) steps in to put him back together. Rebuilt as a cybernetic law enforcement officer, Brown, now named Inspector Gadget, is equipped with everything from rocket- shooting feet to toothpaste spouting arms.
Meanwhile, Scolex, now sporting a mechanical hand and the single-word monicker 'Klaw', plans to use Dr Brenda's designs to create an army of robotic warriors. Now Gadget must save the world, stop Klaw, and rescue Brenda.
If you've never seen the original cartoon, this will provide a fine source of uncomplicated enjoyment. It's a kid's movie, but if you go in remembering that, you should be fine. If you were a fan of the series, there may be some disappointments. You do see Klaw's face, Gadget does not get hit by the Gadget-mallet, and Brain does not talk. However, the Gadget-legs, hands, and umbrella do put in appearances. Just keep saying "it's only a movie, it's only a movie." A Disney movie.
