A burnt out ex-cop turned private security guard, Jericho Cane (Schwarzenegger), faces the ultimate bad guy, Satan (Byrne), in order to prevent his legacy of darkness from continuing into the next millenium. Both are searching for Christina York (Tunney), who is the one chosen to be Satan's bride after she was secretly patronised by Satanists when she was an innocent newborn in 1974. Jericho must get to her first otherwise Satan will have a son born to him and so be free from his eternal prison. If he is freed and an evil heir created, it's End of Days for New York and the entire earth.
This is Arnie's first movie since Batman and Robin (1997), and it's not a bad comeback. The real star, though, is Gabriel Byrne whose performance as the central figure is awesome. He teams up with Kevin Pollak, the mandatory comedic sidekick, and kicks butt. Although the plot is fairly predictable, the special effects and action make for an entertaining and escapist thriller (you'd hope so for an $83 million flick!). Director Peter Hyams keeps up an excellent atmosphere with sometimes shocking or revolting turn of events. The millennium aspect is a bit cheesy and the Biblical framework non-existent, but for Arnie, action or sci-fi fans it's a treat.

The title of this film says it all. Oops! I just gave away most of the plot, which is really finely woven - detailed layer upon layer, with twists and turns that would befuddle Hitchcock. Not. Based on the computer/arcade game of the same name, this film has the same fine detailed characterisation. This time our heroes are stopping the destruction of Earth from the evil Shao-Kahn who is played by Brian Thompson who you might recognise from the 'X files'. With the script being a little lacking on substance, and the bad acting and fighting makes this film a seriously enjoyable laugh. The then cutting edge effects even now seem dated, with multi-headed hydra's straight out of Journey to the Centre of the Earth. This movie will eventually be picked on by Mystery Science Theatre 2000.
