Milo Hoffman (Ryan Phillippe) and Teddy Chin (Yee Jee Tso) are two idealistic computer whiz kids who, after graduating from Stanford, are offered jobs at NURV, a giant Portland software company. The head of the company, Gary Winston (Tim Robbins), a thinly disguised fictional version of Bill Gates, is on the verge of launching Synapse, a world-linking satellite communication system. Milo accepts the job, but Teddy turns down the offer on ideological grounds as he believes that knowledge belongs to the world not to mega-corporations (so why did the Film Group have to pay for the film?) Winston takes a personal interest in Milo, whose genius and dedication would help NURV meet its scheduled release date. Teddy and Milo are on the edge of a revolutionary communication breakthrough, but Teddy is mysteriously killed and NURV coincidentally makes the discovery. Milo's illusions are shattered as he suspects that NURV will literally eliminate their competition (something the audience had worked out half an hour earlier). What proceeds is a paranoid thriller where Milo does not know who to trust, including his girlfriend (Claire Forlani). Perhaps that's the double meaning of the title. You know how it will end and it is implausible, but the film and cast look good and it is worth a chuckle or three.
