Sequel to the very memorable Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal follows the gruesome journey of Dr Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). Silence of the Lambs was a film about Lecter's intensity and in gaol, whereas Hannibal shows Lecter free to do as he wishes to his victims. While the film is at times gory, the overall balance of the film is good although perhaps a more in depth character development between Lecter and FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) would have helped the film. There are also outstanding performances by other co-stars; Gary Oldman stands out in his portrayal of the self-mutilated, vengeful Mason Verger. The screenplay was written by David Mamet, and the usual high quality of his screenplay continues. Excellent directing by Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott. I will not give away the plot but to say that if you have not seen this film yet, then come along. If you have, then come along and watch it again. Overall, Hannibal is a film worthy to follow in the footsteps of Silence of the Lambs.

Background: Once upon a time Sam Neill made a big badass space ship, the Event Horizon, that could travel vast distances in a single moment. Unfortunately, while testing this behemoth, it vanished without a trace. Rather than spend more money looking for the ship, evil government-type people publicly claimed a nuclear disaster had occurred and the ship was destroyed. This 'accident' was the worst space disaster in human history (even worse than Challenger and Apollo 13 rolled into one nasty space disaster!).
Fast forward to the movie proper: The Event Horizon has come home, well at least back to the right solar system. Laurence Fishburne and his crew take Sam back to the Event Horizon to find out what happened. Much (and I do mean much) evilness ensues.
Event Horizon is a very scary movie with excellent effects and an eerie soundtrack. Anyone looking for a good night's sleep after this film is advised not to even think about coming. You will come out of this film a little edgier, and possibly somewhat more warped than you were when you went in. Definitely recommended.
