Have you ever dreamed of being a rock star or of hanging out with rock stars or of having sex with rock stars? Well hop right aboard the Almost Famous tour bus. Your fellow dreamers will be Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup), the lead guitarist and songwriter for Stillwater, a band as close to breaking through as they are to breaking up, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), leader of the non-groupie Band-Aids (because they're in it for the music and not the sex), and William Miller (Patrick Fugit), a fifteen year old kid who has "Rolling Stone" fooled into thinking he is an established music journo. A couple of your guides along the way will be William's mum (Frances McDormand), who is mightily concerned that you get back in time for your exams and stay away from the drugs, and legendary rock critic Lester Bangs (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who was the first one to take an interest in William's writing and get the whole thing going. The driver of the Almost Famous tour bus is writer/director Cameron Crowe who based the character of William on himself (when he was young he toured with The Allman Brothers, The Who and Led Zepplin while writing for "Rolling Stone"). Thus he takes us through a very authentic and affectionate evocation of the highs and lows of the 1970s rock scene, that will make you want to turn up the stereo and air-guitar your way into rock 'n' roll dreamland.
