A fabulous film and winner of 4 Oscars, including best original score. From the novel of the same name by Tom Wolfe. Amusing, irreverent look at the world of top test pilots and the first US Mercury astronauts, and which captures this atmosphere perfectly. Told through the eyes of the legendary Chuck Yeager, experimental test pilot and first person through the 'sound barrier', and the original seven astronauts (Shepard, Grissom, Glenn, Cooper et al). Played with much affection and humour but always with the edge of danger and death lurking in the background. In the comparison between 'The' test pilot and the 'seven' (touted by NASA as 'the best pilots in the world') the seven come off a poor second, but the film finally pays grudging acknowledgement to their bravery and achievements. Those who have seen both The Right Stuff and Space Cowboys will know that much of the 'boofy', macho, male humour spouted by the stars in the latter owes much to that of the former. So, please ensure you have stowed any loose items in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you and sit back, relax and enjoy one of the rides of your life.
