E.T. is a great movie about and for children. It is a story of an alien creature, the E.T. (extra-terrestrial) of the title, who is mistakenly left behind on Earth. Fortunately, E.T. quickly develops a friendship with a curious little boy, Elliot (Thomas), in which E.T. learns about life on earth and Elliot learns about life and friendship.
Feeling more than a little homesick, the very smart alien builds a device so that E.T. can 'phone home'. However, E.T. grows progressively sicker, and, because of their special connection, Elliot suffers, too. Meanwhile, the authorities close in our protagonists. Will they capture our alien friend? Will the alien spaceship arrive in time?
For the cynical, E.T. is a very sentimental family film. On the other hand, this is definitely a movie to see with your own kids. It contains many themes that will not be lost on children: peace, prejudice, understanding the adult world and the magic of friendship.
The 20th Anniversary edition includes never before seen footage, enhanced visual effects, and a new remastered soundtrack. Most of these alterations amount to cosmetic touch-ups. One of the highlights, of course, is John Williams's soaring music. I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the kiddies.

'Gotta Dance! Gotta Dance!'

Gene Kelly is the quintessential American dancing man - he's pure energy, with a big grin on his face, infecting the audience so you can't help but grin too. And Singin' in the Rain is undoubtedly his finest film, the best big, glossy MGM musical ever made, and, dammit, quite possibly the best movie musical ever. It's fun, too.
The place: Hollywood. The time: The late 20s, when sound is causing a revolution in movies. Don Lockwood (Kelly) is the star of numerous silent movies with his on-screen partner, Lina Lamont (Hagen). The problem is, Lina's speaking voice is, well, unspeakable. And her personality's even worse. With Don wooing rising young starlet Kathy Seldon (Reynolds), the team of Lockwood and Lamont could be at an end. Or could it?
Filled with great songs (the title song, 'Make 'em laugh', 'Good Morning', plus tons more), dancing to die for, and a script so funny you couldn't possibly mind that it interrupts the songs, Singin' in the Rain is one of those movies where you come out feeling better than when you went in.
