Peter Appleton is an ambitious young screenwriter working for HHS Studios during Hollywood's Golden Age, 1951. Just when everything seems to be going his way, things start to go wrong. He is blacklisted, gets into a car accident, loses his memory and settles down in a small town where he is mistaken for one of their long-lost sons from WWII. Because of his amnesia, he decides he must be who they say he is, and becomes a part of this close-knit community. Unfortunately, his memory returns and everything is turned upside down.
The Majestic went largely unnoticed at the box office. The good things about this movie are the sets, music, actors and acting, (some notable stars include the NBC president and suitor of Elaine from 'Seinfeld', and Major Winchester from 'M*A*S*H', David Ogden Stiers) plus, of course, Jim Carrey. On the down side, the film is a bit long, and seems to lag in places (better get comfy!). This film doesn't live up to the standard of other films by Darabont (Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption), but I recommend you see it. People may leave with a numb bum, but they will also have a feel-good smile.
