Jay (Rylance) and Claire (Fox) don't know each other by name, but engage in a weekly dalliance. They meet every Wednesday afternoon in his bedroom and although their relationship is physically passionate it is devoid of emotional intimacy. Their relationship is supposed to be free of complications but Jay, who has an ex-wife and daughter, wants more. He follows her out of his apartment after one of their encounters and discovers that she is married and has a child and a few characteristics that he didn't suspect. French director Patrice Chereau (Queen Margot) has failed to invest the characters with any interest. The sex scenes are appropriately mechanical and unerotic but we care little for the fate of the two protagonists. Despite a strong performance from Kerry Fox, who won the Best Actress award at the Berlin Film Festival, the film fails to connect with its audience.
