Minority Report is slick, cohesive and well directed. Based on a Philip K. Dick short story, Minority Report is about a cop, John Anderton (Cruise) who presides over an operation controlling three 'Pre-Cogs,' who drift in a flotation tank, their brain waves tapped by computers. They're able to pick up glimpses of future murders, which allows the police to arrest the killers before they commit the crimes. The plot centres on a rare glitch in the visions of the Pre-Cogs - a 'minority report' - and when Anderton is accused of a future crime, he believes his minority report can prove his innocence.
Spielberg and Cruise prove a powerful combination. Cruise is back at his best - enigmatic, charismatic and with a return to his Mission: Impossible hairdo. Cruise also has a solid cast working with him all of whom deliver excellent performances. The movie is full of cool ideas, including vertical highways, retina-scanning mechanical spiders and cops' sick-sticks whose function is aptly described in their name (ick!). This is Steven Spielberg's best movie in nearly two decades. It's engaging, entertaining and fantastic escapism ... and I loved every minute.
