Jessica Stein (Westfeldt) aspires to be a painter, but works as a copy editor at a New York magazine. Her boss, Josh (Cohen), whom she once dated, is particularly harsh toward the talkative and fidgety Jessica. Jessica is New York's answer to Bridget Jones, a woman who ((mdash)) after tiring of the dating meat market ((mdash)) impulsively answers a woman-seeking-woman personal ad placed by Helen (Juergensen), the coolly confident SoHo gallery assistant. They strike up a friendship that leads to trysts on the couch and the bed, and eventually move in together. As the nature of Jessica and Helen's relationship dawns on Jessica's closeknit Jewish family and the increasingly prickly Josh, the two realise what ties them together.
Kissing Jessica Stein was written by Juergensen and Westfeldt, based on their play 'Lipschtick'. This would make a great date movie, assuming you're not a pair of homophobes. But hopefully there aren't too many of you reading this who are actually cheap enough to take a date to a Film Group screening.
