Melanie Carmichael (Witherspoon) is a girl desperate to hide her past in Pigeon Creek, Alabama and reinvent herself as a New York fashion designer. All is going well, her fashion line is a success and she finds herself engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor (Dempsey) ((mdash)) the son of the New York Mayor (Bergen). But Melanie's past holds many secrets, not the least of which is Jake (Lucas), her soulmate at 10 years of age, and her husband since she turned 19. Determined to end her contentious relationship with Jake once and for all, Melanie sneaks back home to Alabama to confront her past, only to rediscover a life... and maybe a love... about which she had forgotten.
Once you adjust to the slowish pace, the movie is worth staying with, despite its predictability. I mean, how many romantic comedies aren't predictable? Witherspoon's charm holds true in this film, and she is backed by a good supporting cast. Sweet Home Alabama is a good, funny, southern flick for pure enjoyment. It doesn't require thought or guessing... so you can sit back and enjoy.
