Once Upon a Time in China follows the legendary Chinese folk hero, Wong Fei-Hung (Li), through China during a time when foreign ideas were increasingly seeping into the country and when many of the Chinese were being told to move to America because of all it had to offer. The story delves into Wong's struggle against this foreign influence on China, and, unlike typical martial-arts films, this particular film has a well-established storyline as well as many small subplots that further develop its characters. The cinematography, costume, and set design are spectacular, although these attributes do tend to improve through the film. For martial-arts fans, this movie is full of action, with excellent fighting scenes backed by its inventive and highflying wirework. This movie is indeed a classic amongst martial arts movies and is definitely and a must-see, especially if you love Jet Li.
