Connie Sumner (Lane) and her husband Edward (Gere) seem like a classic loving couple who have it all, right down to a lovely house in White Plains, a cute dog and an even cuter kid (Erik Per Sullivan of 'Malcolm in the Middle'). But, shopping in Manhattan's SoHo on one of the windiest days in movie history, Connie literally gets blown into Paul Martel (Martinez). Martel is your average Calvin Klein model as a bibliophile. He has the Spanish looks, the French accent, the permanent three-day beard, and apparently the strength to suspend a woman indefinitely in any position while making love... But I digress. This encounter leads to Connie's obsession with Paul and finally her infidelity.

The movie was directed by Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal). This film is based on La Femme Infidele (1969), by Claude Chabrol, which itself is an update of Madame Bovary. Whilst Lyne's film is more passionate than Chabrol's, both share the fairly daring idea of showing a plot that is entirely about illicit passion and its happy consequences. I strongly recommend this movie to anyone who loves thought provoking movies. Many women will understand why this woman does what she does. Olivier Martinez over Richard Gere... no competition!

Charlie Le Blanc (Reynolds) is a wealthy businessman who discovers that he only has a short time to live. As he prepares to will his fortune to his beautiful ex-model wife Lilly (Burrows), 30 years younger, he begins to wonder whether she may not be faithful to him and therefore not be worthy of the fortune she will inherit. In order to test her loyalty, he befriends a handsome young man, Jimmy Mulate (Facinelli), and offers him money to tempt his wife. Jimmy refuses at first, until he meets Lilly, then he's hooked and the games begin. Unbeknownst to Lilly and Jimmy, Charlie has had a surveillance expert wire the house, so there are no secrets.

Although the plot has many twists and turns, it is an absorbing thriller with an appropriately noir atmosphere. And the location, N'Orlands as the locals call it, makes the film seem very moody and sleazy. Burt Reynolds is by far the best actor in this film. For whatever reason Burt has gone through his own marriage troubles and he brings that out in staggering fashion. The movie was worth it because of him.
