I'm a huge Rock fan, but I thought his last film, The Scorpion King, misfired a bit. He's rebounded, though, and established himself as "the next Arnie" with Welcome to the Jungle. The Rock's certainly found a good vehicle with which to display his athletic abilities, acting skills and sense of humour. The Rock plays Beck, a bounty hunter who is sent to Brazil to find Travis (William Scott). However, once he gets there he gets on the wrong side of Hatcher (Walken), the local boss who runs the gold mine. Throw in a valuable relic and a bartender fighting for the freedom of her people and you've got yourself a movie partner!
Welcome to the Jungle is a great action movie. For me, it is up there with Pirates of the Caribbean and Kill Bill Volume 1 as one of the best action movies this semester. Like Pirates, Welcome to the Jungle elevates itself above the other humdrum SFX movies of late with three dimensional characters and a storyline that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet is still involving. Beck's dislike of guns also adds a great element to the fight scenes that makes them more exciting than most other Hollywood action.
