Frodo (Wood) and Sam (Astin) are travelling into Mordor, led by the treacherous Gollum (Serkis). The other members of the fellowship must travel to Gondor, where the forces of Sauron are massing for an assault on the city of Minas Tirith. 'We are come to it at last, the great battle of our time.' This capstone to the Lord of the Rings trilogy cements Peter Jackson's reputation as a film maker of incredible vision, who has produced what is quite possibly the greatest film trilogy ever made, and certainly the greatest epic. What sets this film apart is a clear understanding about what it is in a story that engages us: the characters. While the special effects are dazzling, they exist only to tell the story, and the impact that the story has on the people within it. There are some gaps in the film, such as the lack of resolution for Saruman's story. But overall this is a breathtaking piece of cinema that is worthy of much praise.
