Monster is worth going along to just to see Charlize Theron's performance as the serial killer Aileen Wuornos. Aileen was a prostitute who was executed in Florida last year after being convicted of murdering six men. But the movie is not your usual serial killer thriller. It follows Aileen's relationship with Selby Wall (Ricci), who has been sent to her aunt's to 'cure' her homosexuality. Aileen desperately tries to hold their relationship together by any means.

Aileen was dubbed a monster by the US Press. Yet debut writer/director Patty Jenkins portrays Aileen sympathetically, giving us an insight into the motivations and circumstances surrounding the killings. The movie highlights the contradictions of a woman who is a victim of her own disenfranchised life. The powerful performances of the cast ensure the antihero angle is pulled off.
