When someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage, a curse is left behind. It never forgives. It never forgets. This movie is yet another admirable American attempt at remaking an overseas blockbuster. However, don't let that put you off. If you enjoyed The Ring, you'll probably enjoy this one too. Karen Davis (Gellar), an international student based in Tokyo, has been asked to cover for a social worker who didn't show up for work on the second day of her assignment to look after an elderly woman. Unsuspectingly, she visits the woman but comes within the grasp of a murderous ghastly presence in the house. Her efforts to make sense of it lead her to the story of a teacher (Pullman) and a married woman's unrequited love for him. After some detective work, Karen finally learns the whole story but also finds herself desperately trying to save her concerned boyfriend from the evil force that she must eventually confront.
I enjoyed this movie very much, moreso because my movie partner covered his eyes every so often. I also found the movie rather amusing, for the combination of white people and Asian ghosts gives the story a curious intercultural perspective.
