Sick of crappy computer-generated animals like Garfield? Had enough of sickly-sweet sometimes-talking animals of the kind in Racing Stripes? Then allow us to introduce you to the charms of The Weeping Camel.
The story, set in Mongolia, is of a baby camel who is rejected by its mother after a difficult birth, and the efforts of a nomad family to rectify the situation (including hiring a violinist!)
If you are the type of person who often avoids this type of movie because you think it will be depressing, then I urge you to reconsider - this was one of the better feel-good films I saw last year. Its characters are charming and quaint, leading a simple, but not poor, life. The landscapes must be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated. Even the camels out-act most of the people in Bridget Jones 2 (they even get their own credits at the end of the film!). The movie also touches on the encroachment of modern technology for these people, but in a light manner.
Enjoy a pleasant night out with this film, and get an insight into a different culture in the process.
