DiG! is an intimate documentary by Ondi Timoner that was seven years in the making. This is a "Withnail and I" like story of two rock bands - The Dandy Warhols and The Brain Jonestown Massacre (BJM). We follow the path of these two bands that had very similar beginnings, but have ended up at different ends of the rock star spectrum. Courtney Taylor, the frontman of The Dandy Warhols, is a fairly grounded character who manages to successfully steer his group through the path between retaining musical originality and creating a commercial success. His friend/nemesis Anton Newcombe acts as a counter-point to Taylor's grounded nature. Newcombe is determined to create a musical revolution and a by-product of his creative nature appears to be a violent and explosive temper, which in the end sabotages BJM's opportunities for success. Anton Newcombe has rejected the film for its "Jerry Springer-esque vilification of his nature", but I'll leave you to judge his habit of hurling abuse at his audience-
This movie also has a delightful character with the superb name of Genesis P'Orridge who provides a quirky perspective on the music industry.
