Its the age-old tale of boy and girl-forced to marry for their families' sake, but separated by accident of circumstance. In this case, boy (unable to get through the vows at the rehearsal) accidentally proposes to a corpse. Cue much Tim Burton oddness, including a maggot sidekick and song and dance routines in the land of the dead, all presented with his trademark spiky visuals and ghoulish flavour. It's not a sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas, and in fact has lost some of the edginess of that movie. But in its place is a welcome touch of (uncloying) tenderness. It's not that often that you feel sympathy for a corpse, after all. And while you know you'll get a fairy-tale ending, you're never quite sure whether it'll be a fairy tale as told by Hollywood or the rather more macabre Brothers Grimm. The only regret is that it's over all too quickly.
