The large quantity of good Australian films last year meant that there were a couple that got lost in the awards season, mainly because they didnt have big celebrities like Cate Blanchett or Nick Cave involved.Peaches was one of those films. It has a much smaller feel to it, being set in a peach factory in a small country town. But the story, revolving around an 18-year-old trying to find out more about her past, has so much depth it transcends the small scope with big themes and real, emotional characters.

Emma Lung (previously known as "the chick who dies in the beginning of House Of Wax!") and Jacqueline Mackenzie are subtly brilliant in their roles, Hugo Weaving gives a more subdued, but just as powerful, performance here as in Little Fish, and even the supporting players (Sam Healey, Matt Le Nevez) are given enough material to explore their characters. You can tell that they all revelled in the rich script they were working with.

Some people have made an issue of the sex scenes in this film, but they are missing the point. Peaches is an engaging, stylish, multi-layered and emotional film, and in my opinion the best Aussie flick of last year.
