Apr((eacute))s Vous... is the most recent in a long line of French comedies that play to non-European sensibilities as well. It revolves around Antoine, a do-gooder waiter who takes it upon himself to help the suicidal Louis get over his depression. At this point, you may think that the word "comedy" in the first sentence was mis-typed, or that this is a very black comedy. Wrong on both counts. At best this could be described as a "grey" comedy, but the humour mainly revolves around the changing fortunes of the two characters - as things start to go Louiss way, Antoine's world starts to fall apart.
Daniel Auteuil plays Antoine with his usual mix of everyman-character and precise comic timing. Jos Garcia (Would I Lie To You?) makes a good Hardy to Auteuil's Laurel, and Sandrine Kiberlain is solid as the love interest. All in all, Apr((eacute))s Vous... is an enjoyable rom-com/comedy-of-errors/buddy movie that will appeal to anyone who enjoyed Tais-Toi! or The Closet. And, if for no other reason, come along so you can say you saw the original when the American remake comes out (Billy Crystal has bought the rights).
