What we have here is one of a new breed of film ("new" here meaning 21st Century, not so much just the last couple of months). Its an offbeat idea, turned into an unorthodox screenplay, and by rights should have been shot as a small indie production with charming, as yet unknown stars. Instead it's a glossy, mainstream Hollywood production, starring Jennifer Anniston and Kevin Costner and directed by the guy who did When Harry Met Sally. The "rumor" of the title is that Charlie Webb, author of "The Graduate" (made into the 1967 film we screened last year), based his book on real people in Pasadena, California; and it's kind of an open secret among the people concerned that this is so. (Which means we get to see the real Mrs. Robinson, played by Shirley Maclaine, and so forth.) The plot of the film? Essentially, the descendent of the original Elaine Robinson (Aniston) is... well, trying to carry on with a standard romantic comedy plot, with the echoes of the events of 30-odd years ago complicating her present life. The mix of quirky conceit and chick-flick tends to weaken the effect of each, but the overall result is agreeable.
