Original movies are rare these days. There are plenty of great films every year, but not many that make you feel that cinema can still surprise you. Ten years after Pulp Fiction came Sin City, and so I expected to have to wait another ten years for something new. Then along came Brick.Brick is a noir story (think crime thriller with voiceover, hardened cop and beautiful but mysterious girl), set in a high school. It revolves around Brendan (Gordon-Levitt), whos trying to track down his ex-girlfriend Emily ("Lost"'s Emilie de Ravin) and unearths a whole lot of deceit and illicit goings-on in the process. There are many things you have to get your head around in this movie. The concept is initially jarring, and the characters use a lingo that will have some dialogue pieces whiz past you (here's a sample to prime you: cops are "bulls", "duck soup" means easy pickings, and a "gat" is a gun). But ultimately Brick will seduce you. It's rare that I want to see a movie again as soon as the end credits roll, but that was certainly the case here (in fact, I did see it twice within one week). This is one of the best films of 2006. Don't miss it!'
