Its Los Angeles in the 1940s... Lee (Eckhart) and Bucky (Hartnett) are former boxers, nicknamed Fire and Ice, who share a unique relationship with Kay (Johansson), Lee's girlfriend. The Black Dahlia is based on the novel by James Ellroy, about a real life murder case. 22 year old would-be actress Betty Short's body is discovered, and Lee and Bucky are sent to investigate. During their investigation, Bucky finds a filmed screen test where Betty discusses herself. As the investigation proceeds, Bucky and Lee come in contact with Madeleine (Swank), a member of a club for women only. Bucky becomes intrigued with Madeleine, while Lee's relationship with Kay begins to suffer due to his obsession with the case. The relationships between the characters are fascinating, and the film is glamorous with that seductive 1940s style. Swank performs really well as Madeleine, however the film has been criticised for some over-acting and some of the character placements. In contrast to Swank's performance, some reviews say Johansson struggles with her role of Kay. If you enjoy an old-time thriller with interesting relationship dynamics, then you're sure to enjoy this one.... '
