Emo - ...short for "emotional"...those who appear emotionally unstable, or talk about issues in their personal lives to people in public forums" (Wikipedia)Hi everyone. Welcome to ANUFGs "Aussie Emo Night".I've been fascinated with the concept of "emo" for the past few years. To simplify things, it appears to be the noughties version of Goths (although those in the scene may cry contrary). And, if I've got it right, 2:37 is a film for emos, about emos.2:37 is set in an Adelaide high school. It follows a day in the life of a few troubled teenagers, and you see several incidents repeatedly, but from different viewpoints (similar to Elephant, but not plagiarising it as some critics have said). The film starts, however, with a teacher (Gary Sweet) trying to break into a bathroom that has blood coming under the door, so you know the day isn't going to end well for one of them. But which one?2:37 is one of the many good Aussie films released last year. It also screened in Cannes, and the director and his actors, all young, show promising talent. Be warned, though - when we get to the suicide scene at the end, it is graphic. And once you've finished, join us for "emo 80s/60s style" with the classic...'

Set in country New South Wales this film looks at the life of Danny (Taylor) a fifteen-year-old misfit, his childhood sweetheart, Freya (Carmen), whom he is still in love with, and Trevor (Mendelsohn) a local Rugby League player with a tendency for minor crimes and generally being a jock. This is a classic example of the depressing teenage story where boy meets girl, girl decides shed rather be with some thug who always causes trouble, particularly with the law, and no one lives happily ever after. In addition to the bizarre love triangle there is also the subplot around Freya and her upbringing. Orphaned as a baby, Freya finds out her mother had lived in what the children of the area refer to as the 'haunted house'. However finding out more information about her mother proves difficult, as the rest of the community is very tight lipped about her. While it is set some 40 years ago, the story is timeless and one that people today can still relate to. It is also a strong example of great Australian cinema that isn't afraid to take on bleak and confronting issues. The film also puts forward powerful images through its lush photography and backgrounds filmed in and around Braidwood, adding to the film's emotional power and further emphasising the feeling of isolation.
