Centering on a group of young marrieds, Little Children follows how lives cross paths in the playgrounds, streets and community facilities of their small community. Part crime, part romance, with a lot of drama, this film examines the cracks in American Middle Class life with emotional results. Based on a highly acclaimed novel, Little Children keeps the literary feel throughout. Dealing with issues such as adultery and paedophilia in a community of young families could be fraught with danger, but the subtlety with which these issues are dealt and the way the culprits' are portrayed leaves you feeling like you cannot demonise them. The plot centres on Sarah (Winslet) and Brad (Wilson), two stay-at-home parents of young children in dissatisfying marriages and floundering careers. Sarah does not fit in with the other mothers, with their discussions about child rearing, and she feels increasing guilt over her self-labelled 'maternal failings'. Brad, supported by his documentary-making wife, is labelled 'the Prom King' by the other mothers. A harmless prank roller coasters into a steamy illicit affair, all while their tiny community is crusading for morals and decency. Worth watching, but don't expect a lighthearted satire.
