Dreamgirls comes to our screens from a 1980s Broadway musical, inspired loosely by the story of The Supremes. Deena (Knowles), Effie (Hudson) and Lorrell (Rose) are three young women with a big dream to become pop stars. Picked to be backup singers for the legendary James "Thunder" Early (Murphy), the girls think their dream has come true. Easily led, the girls are looked after by their smooth talking manager Curtis (Foxx), who tells them how to act and what to wear, as he tries to mould them to appeal to all audiences.Quiet, angelic Deena is pushed into the role of lead singer, upsetting Effie in the process. Deena is also not certain that she wants to be lead, and Effie is the better performer, creating dramas for the girls. Like many musicals, this one has mixed reviews, however the soundtrack is excellent, and there is a story line as well, giving us the background to what can go on in the music industry. Directed and written by a writer of Chicago, this movie also offers us glamour, great singing and a good story. Its an enjoyable music that will have you cheering the girls on throughout the movie!'
