In the 1980s Alex Fletcher (Grant) was a pop star, but these days he earns his living performing at high school reunions and amusement parks. When his manager Chris Riley (Garrett) alerts him to a comeback opportunity, writing a song for reigning pop diva Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), he is racked with insecurity. He hasnt written a song for ten years, and urgently needs a lyricist. Then he discovers that Sophie Fisher (Barrymore), who waters his plants, has a flair for rhyming and poetry. She is reluctant to work with Alex at first, but he is persistent and they eventually get down to the business of making beautiful music together.
I may be going out on a limb here in admitting this, but I enjoyed the soundtrack to this movie. As someone who grew up in the 1980s (another limb here) it was fun to reminisce on the cringe-worthy fashions and music of the era. Grant and Barrymore make a great team, with a talent for this genre. Unfortunately, they are closer to the "cute" end of the scale than "sexy" but I'm yet to see a romantic comedy that really sizzles. I think there's another name for those sorts of films and they have a lot less plot! All in all this is a fun film that you can even bring your granny to see.
