In July 1945, with Truman, Churchill and Stalin meeting in a suburb of Berlin called Potsdam to discuss the future of a devastated post-war Europe, Corporal Tully (Maguire), an irrepressible go-getter who deals in the black market and prostitution, is found murdered. Jake Geismer (Clooney), an American military journalist in Berlin to cover the Potsdam Conference, is drawn into the investigation. Tully had been Jakes driver; and Tully's girlfriend Lena (Blanchett), who now works as a prostitute, was Jake's lover before the war.
The story is told in three sections with three narrators: first Tully, then Jake and finally Lena. The last section, of course, reveals some final, key secrets. To add to the murkiness, it's shot as if it was 1945.
Ok, time to 'fess up: I haven't seen the movie. I'm a tightwad, so I see almost all movies at the ANUFG. Therefore I can't say how well it works. Dave ("At the Movies") Stratten was very enthusiastic about the performances and the plot, and overall both he and Marg quite liked it. With positive comparisons to classics like The Third Man (aka The Man Between), A Foreign Affair, and Casablanca, and two classy Australian actors in Cate Blanchett and Jack Thompson as well as George Clooney and Tobey Maguire, I reckon it's worth seeing, so I'll be there.
