Three decades since the book was released we see a movie adaptation of Katherine Patersons Newberry Award winning children's book that many of us will remember reading in High School.
Jesse Aarons (Hutcherson) is an outsider in more ways than one. He is a fifth grade boy who is interested in drawing despite no one else showing much encouragement. His life takes a turn for the better when Leslie (Robb) arrives at the school. She too is something of an outsider with a vivid imagination. They soon become friends and after walking around nearby woods they find a place they decide to call Terabithia.
Terabithia is a land in their imagination where they are the King and Queen. When they enter the land the world behind them disappears and they engage in all sorts of adventures fighting giant trolls, man-eaters and other evil looking characters.
A warning to those who have seen the trailer but not read the book. This is not another magic story following on from Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings. This is a story about how two friends deal with childhood and use their imagination. There have also been suggestions that because of the dark themes it's not suitable for children. Not true. Yes, there are dark themes; but they are no darker than those that many children go through in their normal lives. The story focuses on dealing with such issues, making it all the more suitable.
