In the late 1980s, a black-and-white independent comic followed the very dark, violent and bloody adventures of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". The serious subject matter and dark humour won an overnight audience. The early 1990s saw the Turtles targeted at a much younger audience, and soon Turtle Fever was fever pitch! The first independent live-action movie borrowed its plot and visual tone heavily from the first comic book series. A balance was still struck though, with younger audiences. The sequels, however, threw this balance out towards the younger market. The new movie is fortunately more-or-less a direct sequel to the first movie, continuing its dark tone and serious subject matter, albeit with plenty of nods to the movie sequels, and both of the cartoon series. This film is completely CGI, with the graphics of the characters being highly stylised. The turtle brothers have now grown apart with Splinter, their sensei, trying to keep them together. Strange things are soon afoot in New York City, where an army of ancient creatures threatens to take over the world! The Turtles must then unite to defeat this common threat, but they will need the help of old favorites, such as Casey Jones (Evans) and April ONeil (Gellar). With the film-makers using film-noir and Hong Kong martial arts movies for reference, this movie is a great ride. Cowabunga indeed! '
