After a centuries-long war on their homeworld, Cybertron, members of two factions of Transformers (big sentient robots that transform between a humanoid form and a cool-gizmo or vehicle form) bring their war to Earth. The evil Decepticons, led by the merciless Megatron, have come to Earth in search of more energy and are more than willing to take over the puny humans by force. The benevolent Autobots have followed to stop the Decepticons and protect the human race. Let the action begin! If ever there was a movie that could have made itself, it was Transformers. Big robots with big guns that transform into cool vehicles, weapons and other gizmos, plus a built in fan base that spans decades of boys and men (and probably few tomboys too). Any simple plot would have fit, provided there was room for all our favourite characters and lots of explosions. Then they hired Michael Bay (Bad Boys, Armageddon) to direct. Bay proceeded to butcher the characters weve grown to love... Bumblebee is now a Camaro instead of a VW Beetle, Megatron is no longer a super-powerful gun, virtually none of the characters bear any resemblance to their "classic" look, he even managed to get the colour wrong for the one transformer he left "virtually unchanged" - Optimus Prime! If you're willing to check your nostalgia chip at the door Transformers is actually a pretty cool action ride. There isn't much more than meets the eye to this live-action adaptation, and die-hard fans will go nuts, but this action-spectacle definitely impresses visually.'
