Francois (Auteuil), a successful antique dealer, is told by acquaintances at a dinner party that they basically believe that he has no friends, let alone a best friend. Spurred on by a bet, he goes out to prove them wrong. After many amusing misfires, he finally takes notice of Bruno (Boon), and gets a few lessons on how to make real friends. There are many French comedies these days that do what the Americans do - that is, take a concept like this and work the script around it. Examples include The Dinner Game and The Closet. This is OK as long as the resulting screenplay is strong and, despite the unlikely nature of the initial dinner party conversation, the comedic situations do actually work here. Both of the main actors carry the film well, and there are many chuckles to be had along the way, thanks to the experienced direction of Patrice Leconte (Ridicule, The Girl on the Bridge). So find a friend, and do them a favour by bringing them along to My Best Friend.
