Incredibly well-received in its home country, As It Is In Heaven is the story of internationally renowned conductor Daniel (Nyqvist), who, following a heart attack at a climactic point of one performance, returns to his hometown in Norrland, far north Sweden, to retire and rest. Home is, however, a haunted place now; and his return brings with it painful memories of brutal childhood bullying.
Reluctantly, Daniel is persuaded to help out with the local churchs choir, drawn together from an eclectic band of villagers, many of whom, in different ways, begin to wend their way into Daniel's life, including the charming Lena (Hallgren). The story is an insular one, focusing on music, on people, on the relationships between the villagers, and on the rifts that lie unseen between them. At this same time what I hear about most from people who have seen it is inspiration, joy, and love.
I've heard so much good word of mouth about this one that I can't wait to see it. Word of mouth often turns out to be the mark of a very good film.'
