If you're looking for some excitement in your life, you need hairspray. Increase the volume in your life- Okay, this is not an advertisement for hairspray; rather it's to encourage you to see Hairspray.
It's a wonderful, fun movie, with great music and a positive energy. Every day, best friends Tracy (Blonsky) and Penny (Bynes) race home to watch the Corny Collins Show on their television set, despite their mothers' disapproval. When Corny Collins announces auditions, Penny encourages Tracy to audition- The story becomes really interesting at this point, but I don't want to give too much away.
I am a huge John Travolta fan, and his portrayal of Tracy's mother Edna is just so wonderful. He can play a female just as well as he can a male! Michelle Pfeiffer also performs spectacularly as Velma. Everyone said however that it was Blonsky and Efron (who played Link) who stole the show.
The 1988 version of this film is very different from this version. This version is actually based on the Broadway adaptation of the '88 film. This means more singing, more dancing, and loads of fun. It truly is a movie with style and vibrancy- much like what we want for our hair!Important editorial note: Unbeknownst to our reviewer when she wrote these words, our screening of Hairspray will in fact be the Canberra premiere (hurrah!) of the sing-a-long version. We're a non-coercive bunch, and no one will force you to sing - but come and enjoy yourselves however you wish. There will be words down the bottom of the screen, and a bouncing ball. I'm told that now that our reviewer knows about this, she is very excited and ready to sing.
