This film is based on the true story of Dieter Dengler, a German-American U.S. Navy fighter pilot who was shot down when on a mission over Laos during the Vietnam War and captured by Laotian tribesmen. After having been held prisoner for a long time, Dengler organised a daring escape for a small band of fellow prisoners of war. Warning: includes depictions of torture, starvation, and extreme diet, so it's not for the squeamish. This is a long movie. Some parts are quite slow, and others are very confronting, possibly intentionally making the actors suffer, and indirectly and vicariously the audience. Some reviewers reckoned that this movie is neither pro- nor anti-war; others thought that the Americans were portrayed quite heroically, in contrast to the Laotians, who were presented as villains. To be fair that's probably unavoidable, since it's about the courage and survival of Dengler and his comrades. As usual, I haven't seen it, but I think it will be quite gripping. If you liked writer-director Herzog's Aguirre, Wrath of God then this will probably also appeal to you. If you like seeing actors suffer, come and see it for that. Otherwise, come and see it to decide for yourself whether it really is pro- or anti-war, or pro- or anti-American.
