At the time of writing, Tim Burton's musical-thriller adaptation hasn't been released, so I type awash with anticipation.
The film is adapted from the Tony Award winning Broadway musical based on the 19th century legend of serial killer Sweeney Todd. Following Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd makes three consecutive musicals for Burton.
We can expect his trademark cinematography: twisted and surreal stylisation and a gorgeous, grey palette. The film boasts a stellar cast led by two of his staples Depp and Bonham Carter with Rickman, Baron Cohen and Spall to boot.
Depp plays the title role of a man unjustly sent to prison. Upon returning to reopen his barbershop, Sweeney Todd learns of the terrible fate of his wife and daughter. Swearing revenge to the people who have done him wrong, he becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and sparks a sinister partnership with Mrs Lovett (Bonham Carter), who owns a shop that sells the worst pies in London'.
