Dan in Real Life is a fun, engaging romantic comedy starring an ever surprising Steve Carell. Dan (Carell) is an advice columnist still reeling from the death of his wife four years ago. He has three rebellious daughters who wish he'd get a life and stop meddling in theirs. So he decides to take the family to the annual family reunion. There he meets Marie (Binoche) who sparks something inside Dan, but she's not as free as they both would like. Throw in interesting family bonding sessions, impromptu songs and even some tender moments and you've got yourself a great time.
Writer/director Hedges does a great job crafting a well told family story that is never soppy or sickly sweet. The scenes are sharp, well put together and create an excellent tale of family and what we may be missing out on. There are plenty of laughs along the way with Carell's trademark fish out of water acting, but he also brings across an honest portrayal of Dan. It's not life changing, but it is certainly life nudging.
