There Will Be Blood is being hailed as a modern masterpiece, an achievement in cinematography, writing and acting. It is a story about family, greed, religion, and oil, centred on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.
Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) is a miner turned oilman, who is motivated by greed, hatred and a lust for power. Lewis's performance is mesmerising as he depicts the depths a man will sink to when driven by hatred. Plainview is the most charismatic villain we have seen in a long time.
Human interactions are the focus of this film and you will be unable to forget the characters, even though you may want to. I don't want to give away too much about the plot. It is the characters, the acting and the cinematography that will leave their mark on you. Do not expect a feel-good movie. You won't leave this film with a smile on your face, but you will probably leave with the feeling that you have witnessed something exceptional.
There Will Be Blood is an emotionally draining, yet worthwhile experience. It has won numerous awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor (Drama).
