At the time your esteemed reviewer sat down to review The Other Boleyn Girl, this movie had not yet been released. But as it's based on the popular book of the same name, it should be easy enough to figure out what this movie has to offer.
Mary Boleyn (Johansson) is the 'other' Boleyn girl - sister to Anne Boleyn (Portman) and lover to Henry VIII (Bana). The movie traces the two sisters' rise in Henry's court, quickly attracting the attention of the King himself. It explores the sisters' love and rivalry, and how one sister obeyed the rules to become the King's mistress while the other defied convention to hold out for marriage and a crown.
Is it historically accurate? Generally yes, but there has been some artistic license taken to craft a more involving and sensual story. That said, even the biggest sticklers for accuracy shouldn't mind the liberties taken if the movie is as enthralling as the book.
Of course, there has been the traditional controversy surrounding this movie. It seems the Poms aren't happy that two Yanks and an Aussie have been cast in the three lead roles. Frankly, if that's the biggest fault the critics can offer, then your reviewer can highly recommend this film!
